Decorative concrete FAQs

What is exposed aggregate?

Concrete with the top layer washed away to show the stones in the mix. It’s hard-wearing, has natural grip and hides marks well, which is why it’s popular for driveways and patios.

Does exposed aggregate need sealing?

It’s common to seal it. A sealer helps resist stains and brings out the colour of the stones, but it wears and needs redoing every few years. Some sealers can make a sloping surface slippery when wet, so we’ll talk through whether sealing suits your job. We can seal new decorative work as the final step.

Which finish is best for a driveway or a slope?

Something with grip: broom or exposed aggregate. A smooth trowel finish can be slippery when wet, so it suits covered areas better.

What is cut and grout?

Saw cuts laid out in a pattern, then filled with grout. It gives a tiled or paved look while keeping the strength of one concrete slab.
